A revista Pitchfork divulgou, recentemente, mais uma de suas polêmicas listas. Desta vez, a publicação americana elencou os discos que ela considera como os melhores lançados na década de 90. Ausências injustificadas e clássicos incontestáveis que aparecem em posições constrangedoras – embora tenham sido responsáveis por delinear a face da música produzida na referida década – chamam a atenção.
Nomes como Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fatih No More, entre outros, que lançaram discos importantes nos anos 90, são completamente ignorados. “Superunknown”, do Soundgarden, na posição 148, “Grace”, do Jeff Buckley, 135, “Siamese Dream”, do Smashing Pumpkins, 98, “Blue Album”, 91, são alguns exemplos de álbuns marcantes que ficaram em posições que não condizem com a relevância têm. Parece até irônico que o lendário “Nevermind”, do Nirvana, tenha ficado em décimo colocado, atrás de “Live Through This”, do Hole, que ocupa a oitava posição.
“Nos anos 90, era provável que você tivesse ouvido apenas uma ou duas músicas de um álbum, no rádio ou na MTV, antes de gastar seus $ 20 suados. Aqui estão 150 álbuns que valeram a pena na época e que moldaram a maneira como a música soaria nas décadas seguintes”, diz o texto introdutório da lista.
O primeiro colocado é “Loveless” do My Bloody Valentine seguido por “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, da cantora Lauryn Hill, “OK Computer”, do Radiohead, “Exile in Guyville”, da Liz Phair, e “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, de Wu-Tang Clan.
Sobre o líder da lista, a Pitchfork justifica: “Você poderia dizer, astutamente, que Loveless combina duas modalidades principais dos anos 90 por ser o maior álbum de rock feito quase inteiramente de samples – loops de bateria, feedback de guitarra, vocais, tudo enviado por um Akai S1000, que poderia então ser acionado a partir de um teclado – criando uma fusão singular de dream-pop e acid-house e hip-hop que definiu um novo gênero chamado shoegaze.”
